According to my camera roll, this was a pretty busy week out here on the farm. We collected maple sap all week in order to make our own homemade maple syrup and ended up with 70 gallons of sap!
In the coop, it turns out that we have a very broody buff orpington. She’s been hanging out in her nesting box for about a week now. I haven’t been brave enough to see how many eggs she’s sitting on, so maybe we’ll find out in another 2 weeks or so. I know that some people discourage their hens from going broody in order to keep egg production up or to breed broodiness out of the hens but I don’t have the heart to do that. Breeding out the natural instinct of broodiness seems so strange to me, so if they go broody, I’m going to let them go broody. So needless to say, we have a very broody and cranky hen in our coop.
And finally, the greenhouse. We’ve had electricians come out this week to help us get the last systems of the greenhouse together. This coming week we’re going to start germinating kale and leeks, despite the climate control systems being in place, in order to keep on schedule. I seems like we’re going to have an early spring so staying on task is going to be very important this month!
It’s starting to feel like spring is just around the corner. Starting seedlings in the greenhouse, baby chicks in the near future and the taste of homemade syrup. But then again, this is Missouri. There could be a blizzard next week. Who knows. But here’s a look around the farm over the past week:
